The only way to get what you want is the ability to define it. That aspect, if missed, will lead to searching without results and frustration. And of course, that is a common trait of job seekers most especially when they are new to the system and desperate.

I thought using take-home pay as criteria for job hunt as a starter has long been overdue until my recent talk with fresh graduates who believe they deserve good-pay from their first job even without experience. Many youths eventually become unemployed due to their ignorant of getting a dream job, not because of their no job.

I was discussing with some colleagues recently when one of them lamented about an issue that generated an hour of interaction about the availability of a job with no qualified person to do it. I argued about given them a chance, but he countered that his challenge is not to give them a try as a fresh graduate but, they are asking for what he cannot pay for even though the pay is not below an average salary for such a position. I can’t dispute that since I have the same experience.

To get your dream job within a reasonable time either as a fresh graduate without experience or with experience but need a change of employment, or get another one, the following points below will reduce your frustration, lag time, and give you an enjoyable job hunting process.

1. Define your desire job criteria: This could be by profession, organization, or industry. Be specific about, and have a focus.

2.Prepare ahead: It is expected you undergo internship/volunteering when you are in school to get prepared ahead of the labor market. As a fresh graduate, if you missed that, it is not too late; it is an opportunity to get closer to what you want.

3.  Get ready: Update your resume to communicate your desire to a prospective employer, do the same with your cover letter. Be specific

4. Network:  This is the time you have to make us of your social media account if you have not in the past. Linkedin is such a platform for this. Show up and share, be consistent in creating content that will generate the attention of a potential employer, and don’t miss the opportunity to indicate your job search. You also have a better chance of getting your dream job through volunteering and internship if you are intentional about it giving your potential employer to see you in action. You can also get your dream job by joining a professional association in your industry.

5. Upskill and Create: Getting a degree is just an invitation to treat, gaining a practical skill to support your certificate is important to show your professionalism and getting ready. Create a solution with that skill and make it available where your potential employer can see it both online and offline.

6. Utilize Mentorship: You have a good chance of getting your dream job if you have a mentor in the same profession or industry as you or a related one. If you cannot find one then join a programme that can officially attach you to a mentor

7.Research Your Industry and Company: Impress your potential employer with your knowledge about the company and the industry. This should be a preparation ahead of the interview, also follow up on the social media sharing your knowledge about the industry and company.

8.Self-promotion: Your social media account is not only to share content and knowledge but also to share your achievement and update your resume with the same.

9. Get your foot in the door: Don’t miss the opportunity to get in not minding the position and pay. It is an opportunity to get your desire job as an insider within the company or industry

You will do yourself a big favour if you can stop dreaming about climbing a tree from up-down. Every achievement has a process, stop draining your effort trying to jump the process.
