The day your cleaner is absent is the day you will realize that everybody matters.
It reminds me of my favourite lecturer in my school days who always motivated us by telling us that he is only fortunate to be in that position and that anyone of us can be and definitely in about 10 years we will have some of us ahead of him. In conclusion, he calls us his colleague.
I love to hear that encouraging statement but sincerely by then I can’t relate to its reality, but today, I knew better.
Don’t get it twisted; I am not promoting laziness or mediocrity with this description. Before you start rejoicing over what you read above, why not think about being the boss that treats others well rather than the messenger that is in the receiving end.
How to Get the Best Out of People Around You
But in reality, everyone matters both in your personal, career, or business relationship. We complement each other except where the other party is becoming a pain in your neck.
People will either respect you out of love or fear. Are you aware of the reason people are still around you?
Gaining or Losing
What determined the way we treat each other is mainly based on gaining and losing. This determinant of more on materialism than any other intrinsic value
It is primary to place the level of importance in every relationship on who is giving and receiving. Other than material, the giving and receiving criteria also include age, intellectuals, position among others with the belief that the person with the upper hands (giving) has nothing to lose as a result deserve all the honour.
But in reality, we all have something to gain or lose beyond the basic and clearly define the benefit of the relationship.
As for the superior, until you give room for people around you to freely express themselves, you may not know what you are losing. This is the reason many organizations pride themselves on operating an open system.
An Asset or Liability
You are either an asset or a liability to people around you. Or better you either treat people around you as assets or liabilities.
More than often, the issue of treating others with importance is common in an employment relationship making it easier for the employer to consider the employees as liabilities rather than an asset. This mistake is costing many organizations more than necessary.
Do you have a Vision or Illusion?
Every organization is expected to have rules and regulations guiding the employees. Many such rules and regulations in favour of the organization/superior more than subordinates cannot be change or amend. The superior have the opportunity to relate with the subordinates treating them as assets creating an atmosphere for personal or organizational benefits.
Naturally, the boss is an asset for both material and immaterial benefits. I am not disputing subordinates have their role to play to make the organization operation run smoothly but can increase their value by;
- Expressing and relating with confidence without disrespect.
- Become skillful valuable to be ignored.
- Understand your employer/boss's aspiration and relate accordingly.
- Develop your political antennae through monitoring your boss's behaviours and interactions.
- Be attentive about your options both within and outside the team/organization from time to time.
- Be intentional in your interaction with your superiors.
- Be ready to volunteer when the need arise
- Be on lookout for better ways to relate to your boss
- Pride kills your value, so be careful
While superiors treat their subordinate with less importance, they are also on the lookout for the exceptional. Are you’re the one?
